    5.How Online Counselling Works?

  • What Is Online Counselling?

The setting includes a patterned rug, brown sofa with textured blanket, abstract wall art, and soft lighting from a table lamp—evoking mindfulness, remote work, or virtual therapy in a calm home environment

Online Counselling is another method of accessing counselling. Instead of face to face contact between the client and the counsellor, online counselling takes place online. The most popular platforms to have online counselling are Microsoft Teams, Skype and Zoom, although other platforms can be used to tailor to the needs of the individual. Regardless of the methods we use to access the support.

    How Effective is Online Counselling?

The decision ultimately rests with the individual, but if online counselling is the only option available, it can be the key to receiving the help you need and avoiding unnecessary suffering. I have been practicing as an online counselor for five years, having initially worked face-to-face before transitioning to a hybrid approach. There are certainly some differences between the two formats. For instance, interactions occur on a screen, and a stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary to connect with the counselor. However, in today's world, where even household appliances like vacuum cleaners rely on Wi-Fi, it's not surprising that counseling services are influenced by technological advancements.

Although screen-based interactions have their limitations, I’ve come to genuinely appreciate the advantages that online counselling can offer. It’s true that we lose some of the subtle cues that come with sharing physical space—the energy in the room, the way presence is felt—but what we gain can be just as meaningful. Being in a familiar environment often helps reduce the initial anxiety of opening up. The flexibility of choosing how we communicate—whether through video, phone, or even messaging—gives people more control over their experience. And for some, the sense of anonymity that online counselling provides creates a safer space to begin exploring difficult emotions. It’s not about replacing in-person connection, but about expanding the ways support can meet people where they are

    ❧

  • Why It Works

Online counselling works much like in-person sessions—it’s just a different way to connect. For many people, it’s simply about what fits best with their life. Maybe you’ve got a packed schedule, or maybe you’ve found a counsellor whose approach really suits your needs, even if they’re miles away.

For some, online counselling can be a vital source of support—especially when getting to a physical space isn’t easy. Whether it’s due to health, location, or other personal circumstances, having online services means people now have more choices that fit their lives.
