What Is Online Counselling?

Online Counselling is just another method of accessing counselling. Instead of face-to-face contact between the you and the counsellor, sessions are conducted through a video platform and just to name a few: Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Skype.

How Effective is Online Counselling?
The decision ultimately rests with the individual, but if online counselling is the only option available, it can be the key to receiving the help you need. I’ve been practicing as an online counsellor for six years and there are certainly some differences in the two methods. With online counselling interactions occur on a screen, and a stable Wi-Fi connection. However, in today's world, where even household appliances like vacuum cleaners rely on Wi-Fi, it's not surprising that counselling services are influenced by technology.
Screen-based interactions have their limitations, and at one point I wasn’t even sold on the idea. But I’ve come to genuinely appreciate the advantages that online counselling can offer. It’s true that we lose some of the subtle cues that come with sharing physical space, such as—the energy in the room. What can be gained however from an online interaction can be just as meaningful and impactful. Individuals have expressed that being in their own
environment that is familiar to them often helps in reducing initial anxiety, especially when encountering the counselling process for the first time. The flexibility of choosing how we communicate—whether through video, phone, or even messaging—gives individuals more control over their experience. And for some, the privacy that online counselling provides creates has the potential to create a safer space to begin exploring lived experiences. It’s not about replacing that in-person connection, but more about providing options and opportunities.
Why It Works
Online counselling works much like in-person sessions—it’s just a different way to connect. For many people, it’ssimply about what fits best with their life. Maybe you’ve got a packed schedule, or maybe you’ve found a counsellor whose approach really suits your needs, even if they’re miles away.
For some, online counselling can be a vital source of support—especially when getting to a physical space isn’t easy. Whether it’s due to health, location, or other personal circumstances, having online services means that people now have more choices available to fit around their lives. The table below shows some of the key differences between online and face to face counselling.
